Cheers to the Austrumi devs! The artifacts that you mentioned are indeed caused by xcompmgr: It's because I had some really bad experiences with wireless connections in the past that make me avoid it like the plague.
Yet DistroWatch's page for this distribution shows the last listed update to be version 1. Count your Linux Box. Unfortunately, I did try that, and it didn't work. It's great that it's working relatively well for you. Here we have the latest version of austrumi yes i know its a little old like 4 months, but have just not got round to doing it.

Based on Slackware, this Latvian live distro offers a surprising amount of software and some really cool desktop features, and it's only a MB download! There are a lot of issues with Slackware based distro's.
